Lackawaxen & Milford
Experience the best of the Upper Delaware and Milford region with a day of scenic waterfalls, historic landmarks, river views, charming downtown streets, and iconic estates. This itinerary blends natural beauty, American history, and small-town charm for a perfect Pocono day trip.

Begin your day in the northern Poconos at the historic Zane Grey Museum, located along the scenic Delaware River. Once home to famed Western novelist Zane Grey, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into his life and literary legacy while showcasing the region's rich outdoor heritage. From there, follow the road south to Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct, the oldest existing wire suspension bridge in the United States. Take time to walk across this National Historic Landmark and admire the engineering achievement that once carried canal traffic over the Delaware River.
Continue to Shohola Falls, one of the area's most beautiful natural attractions. A short walk leads to several viewing platforms overlooking the dramatic multi-tiered waterfall as it cascades through a wooded gorge. After enjoying the falls, drive east on US 6 to the charming town of Milford for lunch. Popular options include the historic Waterwheel Café, Apple Valley Restaurant, the elegant Dimmick Inn, or one of the many cafés and restaurants located throughout downtown.
Following lunch, spend time exploring Milford's picturesque streets on a self-guided historical walking tour. Admire the beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture, browse local shops and galleries, and learn about the town's significant role in the region's history. Be sure to visit the Columns Museum, home of the famous Lincoln Flag - the bloodstained flag that cushioned President Abraham Lincoln's head after he was wounded at Ford's Theatre.
No visit to Milford would be complete without touring Grey Towers National Historic Site, the magnificent former estate of Gifford Pinchot, America's first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service and a two-time Pennsylvania governor. Explore the grand French château-style mansion, stroll through the formal gardens and forested grounds, and enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Grey Towers provides a fitting finale to a day filled with history, architecture, natural beauty, and the cultural heritage of the Pocono Mountains.
